Panthers Earn first shutout behind 14 Stu Hamann Points

Lakeville North took on Apple Valley in South Suburban Conference play Friday night under mostly clear skies and in front of a large home crowd. The Panthers looked to advance to 3-0 and move up in the Class 6A AP Poll with a win and the Eagles looked to bounce back from a loss to Lakeville South.

Austin Hegseth started his third game in a row at running back presumably for injured running back Joey Larson who was the presumed starter in Fall Camp. Other than the running back position the lineup was mostly unchanged from last week’s victory over Shakopee.

Lakeville North fielded the opening kickoff and wasted no time marching down the field against a clearly inferior Apple Valley defense. The Panthers capped off the drive with a short Tristyn Hanson touchdown run from inside the 5. Tristyn would leave the game later in the first half and he did not return.

Safety/K Stu Hamann added to the Panthers lead when he jumped a slant route and beat Apple Valley to the pylon. Etching yet another touchdown for what looks like the best defense in the state. Hamann on the pick six “It’s kind of a once in a lifetime thing, you dream about that, it was a great experience.” Coach Vossen on the sideline adjustments before the pick six “based on the formation we had an idea of what routes they were going to run, so we communicated to him from the sidelines be ready for that (slant) route.”

Stu Hamann went on to account for 14 of the 20 points for Lakeville North on the night between his touchdown, 2 field goals and two extra points.

North held a comfortable 17-0 lead at halftime though it felt like they should be up more after the dominating half.

The Panther defense certainly continued to make it’s case for best defense in the state in the second half holding Apple Valley to 0 points and North Football’s first shutout of the season. Hamann on the defense “I think we really came together after the Shakopee game, we did that tonight, we came together.”

Defensive coordinator Vossen on the shutout “They (Apple Valley) are going to be a legitimate contender, to shut them out, its incredible, I’m very proud of the defense.”

Lakeville North will take on Prior Lake for homecoming next week and the Lakers have been North’s most competitive rival in recent years, including embarrassing them on homecoming two years ago. Vossen said that he would like the team to carry over to next week the way they managed the clock and dominated the game offensively.

Both Rosemount and Eden Prairie also won Friday night which means its unlikely North will move up in the 6A AP Polls.
