Panthers mercy rule Kennedy 11-1 in 6 innings!

Recap

The Lakeville North Panthers took the field for the opening game of the Varsity season Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers looked to get off to a good start to their season and build off last years success of getting to the state tournament.

Dalton Lehnen took the mound against the Bloomington Kennedy Eagles. Dalton struggled early leaving batters on first and third with 1 out. A ground ball to the second baseman ended the threat as the Panthers turned the double play. It was Lehnen who jump started the Panther bats as well driving in AJ Sayer on a base hit to right field. The next batter Ben Jensen drove the ball into the gap between center field and left field driving in the second run of the game. It was Joe Haider who doubled the North lead on a bloop hit over the 1st baseman with two outs. After a fantastic first inning of regular season play North lead 4-1.

It was after a few hiccups in the first inning that Dalton Lehnen really started to show he is the Ace of the Panther rotation. He allowed his only run of the day on a straightaway homerun to center field in the 3rd inning.

The bottom of the fourth inning is where North pulled away in their thumping of Bloomington Kennedy. North would go on to score 6 runs highlighted with a 3 run homerun from Mr. “Everything” Dalton Lehnen. As soon as he hit the ball he knew it was going to fly out of the park. He stopped and watched the ball fly away and then took a victory lap around the bases. Lehnen wasn’t done as he went on to complete 5 innings only allowing 4 hits and 1 run.

It was Wes Ahlers who came into the game to close and he managed to pitch himself out of a minor jam in the top of the 6th. The Eagles could not gauge his pitches as his slider and curve diced up the Kennedy hitters. The final run of the game came for North when Nick Dorfman successfully stole third and watched the ball skip by the third baseman. After a slight hesitation Dorfman trotted home to the delight of the players and Panther fans as they walked away victorious via the 10 run mercy rule.

Coach Market said post game “we played error free baseball, you know we played error free baseball, to come back from our spring trip where the weather was great and the field conditions were perfect to come back and play error free baseball and pitch well that goes a long way in this conference.” Coach Market went on to add “If you can pitch and play defense you aren’t going to need to score 11 runs, that would be one thing that if we could stay the course on that I think that we can play at least with these teams that we are going to play next week.”
